6. When you ask the receptionist if you can speak with this person, it is better to use their whole name: Not: "Can I speak with Mr Evans please." Say this: "Can I speak with Andrew Evans please." This is formal but with a personal touch and gives the impression that you know this person.

Being referred down the line is fine; but trying to refer upwards for eventual purchase authorisation or budgetary approval is nearly impossible, which is why appointment-making should always aim high, with a strategically orientated proposition.

Dont use a script, it will become your downfall. And also remember, unhappy people cant sell. So if you are having a grumpy, bad mood day, STAY AWAY FROM THE PHONE Do some paperwork instead until you cheer up a bit If you always see the glass half empty, GET OUT OF SALES AND MARKETING Its not your thing

So let your personality shine through and be yourself. Be professional, enthusiastic and straight-forward. Resist any temptation to employ gimmicks, jokes and flashing ties - your credibility will be undermined before you even open your mouth

Is Your Local Chamber of Commerce Obsolete

Wandering into the San Jose, California Chamber of Commerce one wonders what sorts of local businesses are members. After all, San Jose is Silicon Valley Central and the home to many of the worlds best known companies.

As one glances at the list of members what is conspicuous is the absence of the heavy hitters. What is also conspicuous is that of the tens of thousands of businesses in San Jose only a very small percentage bothers to join the San Jose Chamber of Commerce.

In the old days local C of Cs were places to advertise and promote your local business. Somehow being a member and paying your 150 yearly fee would put you among the local elite and raise the credibility of your company.

But as in the San Jose Chamber of Commerce most local businesses are not members as well as the "bigger and more important" local businesses.

But its not just San Jose. Go to any local C of C and more than likely you will find the same thing. Why

A big picture analysis shows that the concept of "local" has changed. Technology and specifically search technology has opened the world to the local consumer with more than just local options.

In the old days one did business with those that one knew or knew of locally; now the local consumer can do business with any company they find searching the Internet.

The "Buy Local" programs have simply become obsolete as the concept of local has lost its meaning.

The inference once was that local consumers were looking for businesses and a good way to find reliable businesses was through the local Chamber of Commerce member list. Actually this idea died in the 1970s and 1980s and was in reality not a member benefit by 2000.

In the past a new business would join hoping to gain local exposure and maybe get some extra business. The badly maligned Mixers would help serve this function.

New members were told to bring their "pitches" and stack of business cards and hand them out at the mixers. So in effect the mixer became a big "lets sell to ourselves" exercise, as rarely do non-Chamber members attend the mixers.

Local collective ads were once another way the local Chamber could promote its members; through brochures, local newspaper and magazine ads, an occasional TV or radio spot. As mass media has gotten more expensive, the collective ads have gone by the wayside.

And like many organizations, the local C of Cs have been hit hard financially in the recent economic downturn. As their cash flows have diminished, the Chambers ability to hire and retain good staff had diminished as well.

Hence, all the ubiquitous job postings for Chamber Executive Directors. Part of the "executive package" is that the executive director must raise money to pay for herself.

This means that the primary function of the executive director is not promoting local business but raising enough money to keep the Chamber above water.

But in all fairness, its not just the executive directors fault; what can a group do locally to promote themselves

The biggest complaint today is that the Chamber does little or nothing for its members so it has become harder and harder to justify the time and 150 fee. The first question a new prospect asks is what is in it for my business

If the expectation is increased business, as many new members hope, then the expectation turns to disappointment over time. Thats too bad.

Communities need a strong business community to thrive and communities with a weak business community have problems.

The simple fact is that the local C of Cs are delivering less and less value to their members. Unless the local Chambers are able to redefine their mission and find ways to bring greater value, the Chambers will simply go the obsolete route of newspaper advertising.

The advent of the internet has been a boon to people looking for extra work. The web has made it possible for people to make their abilities and skills available to a wider audience and what was once a geographical impossibility has now become a virtually unlimited technological opportunity.

Why get work online Two words: why not Its fast, its convenient and your income possibilities is almost endless. Here are two reasons why you should give it a try:

1. You dont have to do it full time.

Most people who do work online are those who actually hold regular jobs. Online work is either just a way to augment income or as an offshoot of their present job or hobby. Whats great about it is that you get to do it with or without permission from your boss.

2. No ones breathing on your neck.

Well, probably not literally. Online work means youll be working by your lonesome, out of sight from your online employer. He wont know or care if you had a sandwich when you were working on that draft, not even if you slept midway through a project. His bottom line is that you submit the requirement on time and within spec.

Where and how to find online work.

Online work is of course, advertised online. Try typing the words freelances or online jobs and youll get thousands of possibilities. Try narrowing it down by typing in your specialty or main interest like freelance graphic design or online jobs for transcriptions for example.

Some of the most popular sites are recruiter sites, or those that offer freelancers and online employees access to ads posted by employers looking for a particular service. These sites are pretty organized and jobs are listed in categories for easy searches while employers are categorized by industry. Job specifications are provided and you also get a brief description and backgrounder on your potential employer.

There are also dedicated websites that cater to a particular group of individuals. For example, websites offering online work to work-at-home-moms or virtual assistants or coaching and training specialists. These are very convenient sites to hunt online work with because jobs are already filtered and most employers are already checked.

You can also find online work offered on blogs and discussion groups. Some professional bloggers actually provide links and post ads on their sites so their readers, who probably have the same interests as the bloggers have, are informed of potential online employment.

Some newspapers do carry an ad for online work but this is few and far between. These are also worth checking, though. You never know what they have in store.

A few reminders

As with everything on the internet, be careful. Some sites are operated by unscrupulous individuals who like to prey on surfers. Stick to the more established sites, or those you have read about. Theres a better chance youll find a legitimate employer through these sites than on sites youve never heard before. This isnt always the rule, but just in case, be sure to protect yourself.

Sometimes you pay, sometimes you dont. Some sites require a membership fee before they let you browse job openings. Some require nominal fees while others charge well over a hundred dollars. Some sites are established enough that you can confidently pay the fees, while you might want to be wary with other sites.

There are free sites, though and these could be your best bet if you dont want to pay anything. Also, there are sites who offer free membership, but you only get limited access. Only a subscription to their premium membership gives you access to more jobs or those with higher pay.
